How to resize a photo for Instagram without cropping

You took a great photo, but when you post it on Instagram, someone's head is cut off or the edges disappear. That happens because Instagram only accepts certain shapes. If your photo doesn't fit one of them, the app crops it. Here is how to keep the whole picture.

Instagram's three shapes

Most phone cameras take photos in 4:3 or 16:9, which match none of these exactly. That is why Instagram has to crop.

Option 1: Fit the whole photo with a blurred background

This is the most popular way to post a photo without losing anything. The full photo sits in the middle, and a soft, blurred copy of the same photo fills the empty space around it. It looks natural because the colors match.

  1. Open the Instagram Post resizer (or Portrait, or Story).
  2. Select your photo.
  3. Under "How should your photo fit?", choose Show all.
  4. Download the image and upload it to Instagram. Because it's already the right shape, Instagram won't crop it.

Option 2: Add a plain border

If you prefer a clean look, choose Add border. The photo is fitted inside the frame and the empty space is filled with a solid color, such as white or black. This works well for product photos and quotes.

Option 3: Crop it yourself

Sometimes cropping is fine, for example when the subject is in the center. Choosing Fill frame enlarges the photo until it covers the frame. You decide what gets cut, instead of letting Instagram decide.
